Risk analysis – The Queen or the Cinderella of Information security?

20. 1. 2025 | 7 min read | author: Filip Štolle
Risk analysis is a cornerstone of information security, yet many perceive it more as a necessary evil than a genuinely useful tool. In reality, it is a process that can significantly contribute to effective risk management, better resource utilization, and compliance with regulatory requirements. So, what exactly is risk analysis, and why should it not be underestimated?

Risk analysis involves systematically considering what could go wrong and how it might impact the organization. Think of it as Murphy's Law in practice. The process focuses on identifying threats, vulnerabilities, and their potential consequences to determine appropriate measures. The ultimate goal is to create a prioritized list of specific actions for implementation.

Importantly, there is no single "correct" way to conduct a risk analysis. Whether using complex methodologies like CRAMM or a simple Excel sheet, the result should always be practical and actionable. If the outcome is usable, the chosen methodology was the right one.

Risk analysis is most beneficial at the beginning of projects or when designing new processes. These are the moments when it can significantly influence the setup of security measures, saving the organization time, money, and future complications. Conversely, if the analysis is conducted solely to meet formal requirements or pass an audit, its practical value diminishes.
One of the greatest benefits of risk analysis is its role in meeting regulatory requirements, such as DORA, NIS2, or ISO 27001. These standards and regulations cannot be ignored, but risk analysis allows us to prioritize which measures to implement and how—or even decide not to implement certain measures at all. This enables organizations to meet requirements in a way that makes sense in their specific context while avoiding unnecessary costs or overly complex solutions.
In the hands of a capable manager, risk analysis becomes a powerful tool for identifying weaknesses and directing investments where they make the most impact. Instead of a blanket, inefficient approach to security, it enables informed decisions that respect the organization’s needs and constraints.

In conclusion, risk analysis should definitely not be treated as Cinderella, merely fulfilling the demands of auditors and regulatory authorities. On the contrary, it should be seen as the queen of information security, enabling the organization to grow and operate in a secure environment. When done correctly, it is not just a document for the drawer but a key tool that firmly holds the reins of security. And it’s not nearly as complicated as it might seem.
